Fine Chinese Classical Paintings from the Zhen Shang Zhai Collection
Fine Chinese Classical Paintings from the Zhen Shang Zhai Collection

The Fine Chinese Classical Paintings from the Zhen Shang Zhai Collection presented this season forms part of a remarkable collection of Chinese paintings assembled over a period of nearly two decades by a European connoisseur.

The collection, a total of twelve lots, consists of works by great masters of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Notable works are unique pieces by Shen Zhou (1427-1509), Lan Ying (1585-1664), painter and art theorist Dong Qichang (1555-1636), as well as Orthodox School master Wang Hui (1632-1717) and other seminal artists of their times.

Growing up in an antiques dealer family, whose father dealt with a wide variety of antiques from Old Masters paintings, to Impressionists, Oriental carpets and French furniture in Paris, this European connoisseur took advantage of his surroundings to cultivate a discerning eye for works of art and exquisite things. While other children pursued sports and other recreational activities, he would attend auctions in Paris and around Europe with his father, exposing himself to masterpieces from world cultures.

As a frequent museum visitor, his first love in the painting sphere was for the works of the Impressionists. Once, at a young age, he saved up all the money which he had earned over the summer to visit the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. When he became older and the nature of his work allowed him to travel frequently, he would religiously visit museums on his travels. Among his favorites were the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, the National Gallery and the Louvre.

The Zhen Shang Zhai Collection represents the discerning eye of a collector whom, without the advantages of Chinese language or academic background in Chinese culture, built an outstanding collection of Chinese paintings over the last twenty years. He credits his father's guidance and the decades of museum and auction house visits to an instinct which enables him to identify the best works on the market, without cultural boundary.

After being appreciated and cared for in the private hands of this fine connoisseur, Bonhams Hong Kong takes great pleasure to present this choice group of exquisite paintings to the international collecting community.
