Embodiments of Power & Prestige
Exceptional Collection of African, Oceanic, and South American Arms, Armour, and Textiles to Sell at Bonhams Los Angeles

Auction Date: May 22

This spring, Bonhams Los Angeles will offer a private, single-owner collection celebrating African, Oceanic, and South American artistry and mastery in Embodiments of Power & Prestige: Exceptional African, Oceanic and South American Arms, Armour and Textiles. This extraordinary collection is comprised of the highest quality examples of shields, staffs, weapons, and textiles, and will be offered in addition to a various-owner African and Oceanic Art sale on May 22.

Highlights include an exceptional Cook Island's Pole Club, 'akatara (estimate: $80,000 – 120,000), made from the heart of an ironwood tree, with the top end masterfully carved in a tear-shaped form with finely scalloped edges. From Africa is a magnificent Kikuyu Dance Shield, ndome, from Murang'a, Kenya, (estimate: $40,000 – 80,000) carved from a single piece of lightweight wood with a cylindrical opening in the back to allow a male dancer to wear on his upper left arm. Stylistic traits include relief-like, zig-zag lines painted with natural black and red pigments. From the Toropalca region in Bolivia, are two exceedingly fine 19th century mantles, nañakas (estimate: $50,000 – 90,000 each). Each piece made of alpaca and/or sheep wool is exquisitely woven into soft, rectangular forms in saturated natural colours, reminiscent of later abstract expressionist works of art by Mark Rothko.

The collection was meticulously assembled by a European collector over the last 30 years, resulting in a group of works that illustrates the extraordinary skills and command of design, form, construction, and beauty in pieces which were intended to function as elements for battle.

Since the early 20th century, African, Oceanic, and South American art have shaped the modern art movement, influencing countless well-known artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, and many more with simple yet abstract forms.

Highlights from Embodiments of Power & Prestige will tour at Bonhams New York in early May, with the L.A. preview from May 19 – 22.
