At Bonhams Post-War & Contemporary Art Sale

Post-War & Contemporary Art
16 May 2018
New York

New York - The May 16 sale of Post-War & Contemporary Art was led by M77 by Wojciech Fangor, which realised $492,500. Appearing on the market for the first time, Fangor's M77, 1968 is a striking, complex vortex and an example of his mastery of conceptual representation. Additional highlights from the sale included Sam Gilliam's Time Before History, Alfred Jensen's Doric Order, and Green Light, a monumental early work by Sean Scully.

Jeremy Goldsmith, Vice President and Director of the Americas, Post-War & Contemporary Art, commented: "Bonhams continues to dominate the Fangor market and we saw competitive bidding around the globe for this extraordinary painting. There was also intense bidding on Sam Gilliam's Time Before History, reflecting the attention he has received from the major gallery shows in the past year. We are also pleased to see a strong result for Sean Scully's Green Light, a prime example of his early work while at Harvard."
