Depicted here is a scene outside a village post office with numerous figures gathered around to hear news of the British victory in the first Sikh War printed in the Times newspaper.
There appear to be two further versions of this subject painted by Goodall, including a smaller version that can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum and a larger version, exhibited at the British Institution in 1850 later engraved by Charles William Sharpe in 1862.
