Five Faceted Burmites

Cretaceous
Hukawng Valley, Northern Kachin State, Burma

Once thought to be about the same age as Mexican amber, it was recently found that Burmite is much older--at least 100 million years old--or dating to the Cretaceous period. Other ambers that are used for jewelry or carvings are much younger, typically dating to the Tertiary period. Possibly because of its age, burmite is harder than other ambers, and it takes a very high polish. The present examples feature: a fine emerald-cut stone faceted to reveal its high degree of transparency and luster, weighing approximately 5.21 carats and measuring 17.85 x 11.95 x 9.90mm; together with an orange hexagonal shield-shaped Burmite, weighing 4.43 carats; and a circular-cut Burmite, weighing approximately 4.11 carats; a pear-shaped Burmite, weighing 4.17 carats; and an oval Burmite, weighing 4.18 carats. Total carats weight approximately 22.10 carats. (5)
