Sillimanite var. Blue-Grey Fibrolite

Mogok, Burma
A large number of minerals are found in the alluvium of this region: scapolite, adularia, moonstone, chrysoberyl, iolite, quartz and sillimanite var. fibrolite. Named after Benjamin Silliman, a mineralogist from Yale University--fibrolite is a fibrous variety of this mineral, yet in this case this is a gem version with high clarity. Fibrolites with a weight of over 5 carats are rare. The present stone has been faceted as an attractive cushion-shaped stone of blue-grey hue with an excellent face-up appeal and clarity. With a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 it is suitable for mounting in jewelry. Weighing approximately 5.13 carats and measuring 11.4 x 9.7 x 6.3mm
