Nolan was called up for military service in March 1942 and two months later arrived in the Wimmera district of Western Victoria to guard stores. For the first two months there he was constrained by time and lack of materials to making pastel or watercolour sketches. The present work, painted in August 1942 on a piece of plywood packing crate, is one of his first Wimmera paintings, a series described by Patrick McCaughey as, 'a turning point in the depiction of the Australian landscape.' In 1983 Nolan donated most of his Wimmera paintings to the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
