Portraits of children are an emblematic part of Max Band's oeuvre. This gentle series highlights Band's virtuosity in complex psychological portrayal and heightened spiritual aspect. The present portrait of a boy holding a drum belongs to the series of the artist's depiction of his son. The notion of paternal love and, perhaps, a reflection on the artist's own childhood and orthodox upbringing find expression in the enigmatic gaze of the boy. Another version of the portrait depicting Band's son as a drummer titled Garçon au tambour is reproduced in Paul Fierens, Max Band, Paris, 1935, plate 1.
