c.1982 CCM Trials
Clews Competition Motorcycles came into being in 1972 when its proprietor Alan Clews purchased the stock of BSA's defunct competitions department. Clews had already gained plenty of experience in developing his own BSA-based scramblers and the acquisition gave him the opportunity to offer complete machines for sale. He finally abandoned the BSA-based design in the early 1980s, merging his company with Armstrong and switching to Rotax powerplants. For its new trials bike though, CCM turned to the small Italian engine manufacturer Hiro. Based in Milan, Hiro concentrated on producing single-cylinder, air-cooled, two-stroke units for trials and moto-cross, which were supplied to Beta, Fantic and Aprilia as well as CCM. Trials legend Sammy Miller helped develop Hiro's trials motor, which powered CCM works rider Rob Edwards to two successive British Championships in the 1980s. CCM's trials bike was marketed in the USA under the Can-Am name. At time of cataloguing it had not been possible to determine whether this example has the 250cc or 320cc Hiro engine. The vendor advises us that a 'frame upwards' restoration was carried out in April of this year, though there is some damage to the swinging arm and some of the glassfibre bodywork is cracked. There are no documents with this Lot, which is sold strictly as viewed.
