Félix Fénéon, first owner of this painting, was an influential critic and collector, and with Camille Pissarro was one of the first of Neo-Impressionist circle to recognize Maximilien Luce's talent. Luce had trained initially as an engraver producing illustrations for the popular press, giving him a strong grounding in draughtsmanship. He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendents in 1887, where he caught the eye of both Pissarro and Fénéon. They encouraged Paul Signac to buy Luce's La Toilette at the exhibition, and from that year he exhibited regularly with the group.
