The elaborate serpentine top-rail outlined with carved bell-flowers and foliage, centred by a shell and flower cresting, the sides with similar floral sprays above padded arm caps with leaf scroll arm terminals above moulded supports, the serpentine seat-rail with a central anthemion flanked by a series of paterae linked by bell flower swags, on eight leaf-carved cabriole legs, re-gilt, 185cm wide, 75cm deep, 93cm high (72 1/2in wide, 29 1/2in deep, 36 1/2in high).

    An almost identical giltwood sofa recorded in the collection of the Earls of Pembroke at Wilton House, is illustrated in Anthony Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, 1968, pl. 201.

    The form and design of the present sofa relates in certain respects to carved giltwood sofas supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Sir Lawrence Dundas at No. 19 Arlington Street London in the mid 1760s (see C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale,, 1978, pp. 196-197, pls. 357 and 358).
