Born in 1961 in São Paulo, Brazil, Vik Muniz currently lives and works in New York City and Rio de Janeiro. Employing a labor-intensive process, Muniz reproduces images often familiar to the Western viewer such as iconic paintings or legendary photographs using a wide range of common materials including powdered pigment, dust, garbage or foods like sugar, chocolate and caviar. He then photographs and destroys the reproduction, leaving only the photo behind. Viewed from a distance, the illusionistic effect and the resemblance of his works to the original pictures are striking. However, when seen up close the images dissolve into a chaotic array of materials. The materials used always have a contextual link to the original images. For example, in his Pictures of Dust (2000) series, he reproduced photographs documenting minimalist sculptures at the Whitney Museum of American Art using dust collected from the museum's exhibition spaces.

Muniz has exhibited at the Whitney Biennial in New York (2000), 46th Corcoran Biennial in Washington D.C. (2000) and the Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art in the United Kingdom (1999) and represented Brazil in the 49th Venice Biennial (2001). He has had numerous solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Frick Art Historical Center, Pittsburgh (2013); the Museo Banco de la República, Bogatá (2013); the Collection Lambert, Avignon, France (2012); the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Málaga (2012); the Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro (2009); the Tokyo Wonder Site, Tokyo (2008); MoMA PS1, New York (2007); Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Roma, Rome (2003); The Menil Collection, Houston (2002); and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2001).

Muniz's works are in notable public collections including the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Cleveland Museum of Art; the Solomon R. Guggeheim Museum, New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art amongst many others. In 2010, Muniz was featured in the documentary film Waste Land, directed by Lucy Walker, which was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 83rd Academy Awards.
