Art of Nature - The Journey of The 3.04 Carat Fancy Intense Blue Diamond

Natural colour diamonds have long been valued for their rarity – coveted by many but owned by few. In the world of luxury products, natural colour diamonds are likened to works of art, hidden treasures, and rare books. They speak the language of exclusivity, desirability, and collectability.

Scott West is one of the world's most distinguished houses for rare and exotic natural coloured diamonds. The family's history spans over five decades and is a story of expertise, dedication and innovation.
Scott West's grandfather, Max, started his career as a commodities dealer in the heart of New York City's diamond district in the early 1950s. With a keen sense of adventure, Max began travelling to distant points in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America, looking for sources of desirable metals, diamonds and gemstones. Max soon transformed his business into an exclusive distributor of diamonds, thriving in an evolving market.
After Max passed away his son, Larry West, inherited the family business at the young age of 21. Over time, Larry used his tremendous skill to consolidate their inventory into larger, finer quality diamonds, by re-polishing and cutting them to diminish internal imperfections and improve the life and colour held deep within each stone.
In the 1980s, Larry travelled to Australia and learned of natural pink diamonds being discovered at the, then, unknown Argyle Mine. Whilst working with these natural wonders, he found that improving their colour increased their value far more than it did colourless diamonds. It was then that Larry decided to dedicate his entire business to exceptionally rare coloured diamonds.
Larry's son, Scott, joined the family business in 2007. Like his grandfather and father before him, Scott has adapted the business to thrive in an ever-changing market. Today, Scott West, holds one of the most important collections of natural coloured diamonds in the world.

    Scott West

Over billions of years deep within the earth...

Incredible circumstances created natural colour diamonds. Minute amounts of trace elements interacting with carbon atoms brought about the natural colour in these diamonds. Tiny amounts of nitrogen created yellow and orange shades. Boron created blues, and hydrogen produced violet. Tremendous pressure occasionally would realign or twist the diamond's crystal structure, creating red, pink, purple and brown diamonds. Millions of years of natural radiation produced green diamonds with limitless variations in colour.
The journey of the 3.04 carat intense blue diamond began in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa, about 60kms outside of Kimberly. Discovered in its rough form at the Rooipoort Mine with a total weight of 6.94 carats. The Rooipoort mine is an alluvial mine with discoveries of blue diamonds being less than 0.1% of the mines production making discoveries of blue diamonds extremely rare and an astounding occurrence at this mine.

"For centuries, natural colour diamonds have been regarded as the world's most sought-after gems, from collectors to royalty. For decades collectors have travelled across the world in search of the most exclusive and rare diamonds ever unearthed."

The individual blue diamond is exceptional; and personalized by size, shape, clarity and colour. The planning of shape and cutting angles are a masterful art, to bring the diamond to life with maximum brilliance takes patience and exquisite skill.

After the diamond is cut, the stone is then polished using mechanisms permeated with diamond dust – the only known material to be able to polish a diamond to its full brilliance.

"A coloured diamond in its rough form, waits patiently to be brought to life to show its fullest colour potential."

    Milestones -

    Early 2014
The blue diamond was discovered in its rough form at a total weight of 6.94 carats at the Rooipoort Mine in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa. The Rooipoort mine is an alluvial mine with discoveries of blue diamond's being less than 0.1% of the mines production.

    2014
Examination of the blue stone begins; expert analysis is required to determine the diamonds fullest colour potential and to decide the best cut and clarity, as the gemologists must examine each cutting possibility.

    2015
The diamond was studied up to a year to determine its final cut and clarity. The end result is a beautiful and rare 3.04-carat, oval-cut, fancy intense blue diamond, with a clarity grade of VS2 from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
