8vo (223 x 133 mm). 32 pp. Facsimile brown wrappers. Custom chemise and quarter morocco slipcase. Mild foxing, title toned, some creasing throughout, loss of outer third of last leaf neatly repaired with text supplied in facsimile, two expert repairs to title.

FIRST EDITION. Walton's guidebook contained "much useful information" (Kurutz) as well as many cautionary remarks to prospective gold rushers. Those noted by Cowan include "Stay at home"; "If you go to California take any route but the Isthmus"; and "Take ten cent pieces, as many as you can get transportation for; eight of them make a dollar." Very scarce in any condition: only 2 copies appear in the auction records of Americana Exchange, including the present example. Cowan I p 243; Cowan II p 668; Howes W77; Kurutz 658; Sabin 101210.
