Footnotes

  • The reference 5102 is one of the most complex watches designed by Patek Philippe. It was first presented at the 2002 Basel Fair in Switzerland and is comprised of over 300 individual parts.

The sheer quantity of horological complications this wristwatch contains is unparalleled in its beauty and craftsmanship. Depicted on the dial are the stars of the northern hemisphere combined with the orbit and lunar cycle of the moon, the passage of Sirius, time of the meridian, sidereal time and sky chart. By layering sapphire crystal discs depicting each of these elements upon each other, Patek Philippe created a watch at the cutting edge of sophistication allowing the wearer to be drawn into the astronomical world above them.

The model evolved over the years and finally in 2009 the 5102PR was launched featuring a platinum and rose gold case as with the current lot. In 2012 the model was discontinued and replaced with the reference 6102. The production number of the 5102 was very small and as such it is rare for them to come to auction.
