Footnotes

  • This is from the series of twenty woodcuts depicting scenes from the Virgin's life. The theatrical setting illustrates the significance of this moment. As a messanger from God, the majestic angel is given a prominent position centre stage. The Virgin's pose is humble but her status is indicated by the shining dove above her. The vase of lillies symbolizes her purity, whilst the portrayal of Judith and Holofernes in the roundel above and the chained badger below the stairs represent the evil forces to be kept at bay.
This is an early impression before the addition of text on the reverse of the sheet for publication as a book in 1511.
