Footnotes

  • Bellange was a painter and printmaker employed at the court of Nancy. His commissions were for paintings within the Duchy of Lorraine, therefore it is likely that his printed oeuvre was produced to publicize his work further afield. The influence of Mannerist artists, such as Spranger and Parmigianino, can be seen in the elongated figures, small heads and elaborate drapery. The delicate details in the dress and the mythological subject matter may also stem from the artist's experience designing costumes for court masques and ballets.
The Latin inscription makes a comparison between the hunter carrying Diana and Zeus abducting Europa. The hunter is believed to be Orion, with hunting nets draped over his arm, who pursued Diana and she accidentally killed him with an arrow. The arrow surmounted with Diana's symbol, the crescent moon, is directed towards the hunter's heart; whether it is an arrow of love or death is debatable.
