Extinct American Lion – An Enormous Skull
Panthera atrox
Late Pleistocene - Rancholabrean
Alaska

One of the most rare and sought-after carnivores, Panthera atrox, formerly known as Felis atrox, is the largest cat that ever lived. The extinct species is a relative of the African Lion (Panthera leo.) The American Lion is sometimes known as the North American Lion. Weighing approximately 700-800 pounds, the apex ice age predator boasted an estimated bite force of 1,800 pounds per square inch. Its muscularly built body, with longer, more powerful forelegs than an African lion, gave it a greater advantage in chasing prey. It ranged from Alaska to the middle of South America.

The present very large American Lion skull was discovered in the permafrost of an Alaskan gold mine. The massive individual to which this skull belonged was likely one of the largest cats to have ever walked the planet. The fossilized bone, displaying light brown coloration, is exceedingly well-preserved. Specimen length measuring 16in; overall 12 x 16 x 12in x in
