Lot Details
Triple Crinoid
Seirocrinus subangularis
Lower Jurassic
Posidonienschiefer Formation, Holzmaden, Germany

The Posidonienschiefer Formation is known as a fossil lagerstatte, an accumulation of fossils representing an entire prehistoric ecosystem. Exceptional natural composition and very fine preservation distinguish this plate displaying three crinoid specimens. Subtly shimmering pyrite imparts a glowing presence to these fossilized animals, which are plant-like in appearance. These sea lilies would have floated, attached to a piece of driftwood, as they filter-fed in the warm Jurassic sea.

Arduous laboratory preparation is required to reveal fossils from this locality from their surrounding matrix, which is similar in density to the fossils themselves. The present subtly shimmering crinoids are beautifully contrasted against the matte black shale matrix of this locality. Measuring 64in x 37 1/2 x 1in
