A PACIFIC SYSTEMS SQUARE NOSE REDWOOD SURFBOARD
Redwood, 1920s.
Provenance: Santa Barbara Surfing Museum.

Pacific System Ready Cut Homes was started in 1908 by William Butte and Brene Barker. By 1939 it was the largest home builder in the world. Meyers Butte, the founder's son, joined the firm in 1929 when the Depression forced his early withdrawal from Stanford University. A talented athlete, the younger Butte was keen on the Hawaiian sport of paddling and surfing. He suggested to the family firm that they explore the manufacture of surfboards, which were up to that point made individually and difficult to obtain. After a period of research and development, which included the development of a saltwater-proof glue, the company began to offer this plank model which was very similar to the basic planks in use at Waikiki. In 1932 the company sent 6 boards to Honolulu, the first mainland surf products imported into Hawaii, marking the moment when the sport of surfing opened up beyond Polynesia.
