Les Promeneurs represents an important theme which Rousseau would revisit frequently: the leisure time activities of the bourgeois family. It also possesses instantly identifiable stylistic elements characteristic of Le Douanier's oeuvre, which would have a profound influence on later naïve artists. Often treated as little more than an amusing amateur by his contemporaries, Rousseau and his work are now firmly established within the pantheon of 20th century modernism.
