Semiramis is one of Chiparus's most sought after and impressive Art Deco statues. Made around 1928 this cold-painted bronze and carved ivory work represents an actress dressed as the legendary Queen of Assyria. The elaborate jeweled costume was inspired by Leon Bakst's designs for the Ballets Russes. Diaghilev's famous dance company, which first performed in Paris in 1909, was a constant source of inspiration for Chiparus and other artist of the period.
