Spring Arrives Early for Bonhams Watches

A fine 18K white gold Rolex Submariner 'Smurf' was the top lot in Bonhams Watches and Wristwatches Sale on Tuesday 23 February in Knightsbridge, selling for £30,250, double its pre-sale estimate, leading a successful auction which had a 90 per cent sell-through rate.

Penny Morris, Bonhams Head of Watches and Wristwatches at Knightsbridge, said: "This was a good solid start to 2021. The number of registrants has continued to rise year on year and today we welcomed many UK bidders which shows that the domestic market is strong. We also had lots of interest from Asian-based bidders, notably in Hong Kong."

All top five watches in the department's first sale of 2021 exceeded their upper estimates with a 2016 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona and a 2007 Patek Philippe Aquanaut both realising £25,250.

The live and online auction, which had an auctioneer at the rostrum while bids were accepted remotely, offered a selection of modern and vintage timepieces. The majority of lots were sourced from the UK's domestic market and most bidders were from the UK.

Penny Morris continued: "Motorsport inspired timepieces were also popular - no doubt due to the popular motorsport watch webinar Bonhams watches hosted the day before the sale.

"The sale's success follows on the heels of last year which was the best performing year for the department in which Bonhams became the sector's UK market leader. We hope that this year will continue in the same vein."

The next sale to be staged by Bonhams Knightsbridge will take place on 18 May. The Bonhams watch department is presently hosting virtual valuations. Please contact: watches@bonhams.com.
