Woman's Hour at Best-Ever Bonhams Knightsbridge Watches Sale

PATEK PHILIPPE GONDOLO GEMMA LEADS STRONG SELLING LADIES' WATCHES

A Patek Philippe Gondolo Gemma, a lady's version of the brand's luxury wristwatch, doubled its pre-sale estimate to achieve £19,000 as the top lot in the Bonhams Watches and Wristwatches Sale on Tuesday 16 November, the most successful auction held by the department in its Knightsbridge saleroom to date, with a 93% sell-through rate.

The lady's automatic wristwatch, Ref: 4991R-001, purchased 11 December 2007, featuring an 18k gold case set with 72 diamonds, led several ladies' watches performing well in the final Knightsbridge sale of the year. Other strong sellers included:

Patek, Philippe & Cie, Geneve. A lady's 18k gold, enamel, diamond, and pearl set keyless wind open face pendant watch with complimenting chain, circa 1900, sold for £11,475.

Cartier Bamboo Coussin, circa 1970, sold for £11,475, double its pre-sale estimate. An 18k manual wind wristwatch, named as such due to its bamboo style bezel, inspired by the 1970s' 'back to nature' design movement.

Penelope Andrews, Bonhams Head of Watches and Wristwatches at Knightsbridge, said: "Ladies' watches led the way in our most successful Knightsbridge sale to date. We had consistently strong bidding throughout the sale, and we're delighted with the result, which reflects a buoyant market at present."

Further highlights from the sale, which offered more than 260 contemporary and historical timepieces, included:

Rolex Sea-Dweller 'Great White' Ref: 1665, purchased 11 April 1986, sold for £16,500. This version of the popular tool watch, was introduced in 1977, succeeding the 'Double-Rad Sea Dweller' and replacing the red text on the dial with white, hence its nickname.

Patek Philippe Ref: 3606, circa 1965. This 18k gold automatic wristwatch with sigma dial sold for £10,200, doubling its pre-sale estimate.

Meanwhile, the online single-owner sale of the Collection of a Distinguished Gentleman – a representation of a lifelong enthusiasm for pocket watches – which ended yesterday, also performed strongly, achieving an 88% sell-through rate.

Comprising interesting and unusual pocket watches and watch movements, the top lot, an historical Parkinson & Frodsham silver consular cased key wind spring Detent pocket watch, London Hallmark for 1858, used for the Transit of Venus Expedition, made £6,120, double its pre-sale estimate.
