Bonhams Prints & Multiples Summer Sale in Los Angeles

Los Angeles – A strong selection of works from iconic artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Rufino Tamayo, Norman Rockwell, and Alexander Calder comes to Bonhams Los Angeles for the Prints & Multiples sale on June 14. Leading the sale is an impressive print, Blue with Red, 1987 by Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993), estimated at $20,000 – 30,000. Known for incorporating into his work and taking inspiration from California and its landscape, Diebenkorn's oeuvre can be broken down into distinct aesthetic periods and this work is from later in his career when he was focused on abstracted geometric forms in the same style and time as his famed Ocean Park series.

Four works coming from The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the West, will be sold to benefit the future of Latin American art in the community. Three of the works, Protesta (estimate: $5,000 – 7,000), Cabeza Sobre Fondo Azul (estimate: $3,000 – 5,000), and Busto en Rojo (estimate: $3,000 – 5,000), are by Mexican American painter Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991). Working in both New York City and Mexico City, Tamayo's paintings and prints were vivid in color and brought together influences from European modernism and Mexican folk art. Also from the museum, Dancers by Carlos Mérida (1891-1984), a Guatemalan artist known for integrating Modernist art and Latin American culture, is estimated $1,200 - $1,500.

Additional highlights include:

• Two prints by Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), a complete set of 8 lithographs depicting scenes from the celebrated novel, Tom Sawyer Suite 8, estimated at $4,000 – 6,000, and a lithograph of a couple sitting atop a globe, On Top of the World, estimated at $1,000 – 1,500.

One Plate, from Magie Eolienne Portfolio by Alexander Calder (1898-1976), estimated at $1,000 – 1,200. Though he was best known for his innovative mobiles, Calder created in a wide variety of mediums including painting, jewellery making, and set and costume design.

• Several works from American artist and ornithologist, After John James Audubon (1785-1851), including Californian Vulture (Plate CCCCXXVI), from The Birds of America, estimated at $10,000 – 12,000, and Spotted or Canada Grouse (Plate CLXXVI), from The Birds of America, estimated at $5,000 – 7,000.
