Buyers Show Up To Bonhams Los Angeles Design Sale

Los Angeles - Proving significant buying interest during the summer season, the Bonhams design department in Los Angeles realised 100% by value and 86% by volume on July 28 at the Modern Design | Art auction. A world record for husband-wife ceramic artists Michael and Magdalena Frimkess (b. 1937, 1929) was achieved for a vase depicting Popeye at $65,895, and impressive results were achieved for four additional works by the artist in the auction. An impressive chandelier by renowned studio glass master Dale Chihuly (b. 1941) reached $138,975, one of the strongest prices achieved for his chandeliers at auction.

Additional results soared past estimates, including a hand-woven rug (c. 1930) by Ernest Boiceau (1881-1950), reaching $82,275, re-affirming demand for exquisite unique textile works from the French Art Deco period. A marble coffee table by Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) reached $24,225, a record for the table and a significant result for the female Italian Modernist who was working in a male-dominated field at the time.

Featured in the 322 lot auction were two special capsule collections, including the design and art collection of Nanette Laitman, which was 100% sold with proceeds benefiting the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. The collection included works by Toshiko Takaezu ($5,737), Rick Dillingham ($8,925), Georges Jeanclos ($4,845), and Michelle Holzapfel ($6,120), artists whose works are also held in the Museum's permanent collection.

A second curated capsule included a selection of Latin American art and design, also resulting in 100% sold, signalling continued demand in the market. Mexican artist and designer Pedro Friedeberg (b. 1937) saw positive results for his Surrealist pieces including his infamous Hand-Foot chair going for $14,025 and a gilt Centipede Chair for $10,837, as well as a unique gilt Candelabrum for $12,750. Additionally, six works by José Luis Cuevas (1934-2017) and four works by Francisco Toledo (1940-2019) all sold at 100% value.
