Robert Smith is Bonhams' Regional Director for the Southeast. Based in Guildford, he travels throughout the counties of Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Hampshire offering valuations for auction, probate and insurance purposes. His expertise ranges from 19th century, Impressionist and modern paintings to modern British and Irish art and post-war and contemporary art, as well as prints and multiples.
Since joining Bonhams in 2012, Robert has sourced some exceptional items including a pastoral landscape by Claude Lorrain, which sold for £722,500; Ben Nicholson's Composition from 1939, for £200,000; Richard Lin's 1970 Untitled for £150,000; and a street scene by L.S. Lowry, sold for £490,000 via private sale.
Prior to Bonhams, Robert worked at the Redfern Gallery, before becoming a Specialist in Modern British Art at Sotheby's, after which he was an art dealer at MacConnal-Mason Gallery in St. James's. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art from the University of East London.
