Three Trapiche Rubies

Mong Hsu, Burma
Trapiche, the Spanish word for a six-rayed spoke, is a term usually reserved for describing a variety of emeralds with that feature. But few collectors realize that it can also be used to describe certain varieties of corundum—in this case rubies. Myanmar is the source of a range of trapiche gemstones that display a distinctive spoke-like star. The rubies possess six translucent-to-transparent ruby "sections" that are delineated by "arms" of translucent-to-opaque material, resulting in a fixed six-rayed "star." The arms in the Mong Hsu material reportedly consist of ruby and solid, liquid, and two-phase inclusions, with the solid inclusions composed of calcite and dolomite. These three deep red color samples are cabochons cut in cross-section of a larger crystal and reveal this unusual mineralogical formation. Such gems are increasingly rare in today's market. Weights of the three trapiche rubies: 1.0 carats, 0.61 carats and 0.59 carats. Together weighing approximately 2.20 carats. (3)
