Judy Dater, Imogen Cunningham: A Portrait, New York Graphic Society, New York, 1979, cover and p. 126.
Judy Dater made this photograph as part of a demonstration on lighting and poses that she was teaching with fellow photographer Imogen Cunningham at a photographic workshop in Yosemite hosted by Ansel Adams. The composition was inspired by Thomas Hart Benton's Persephone, a modern interpretation of the allegory of Pluto (see lot 126). In the painting, Benton depicts an elderly man gazing upon a much younger woman. Here Dater flips the script by juxtaposing two women, replacing voyeurism with youth and age in a direct visual exchange.
The print on offer here is in platinum, which rarely comes up at auction.
