Peter O'Toole's Atmospheric Yeats Work at Bonhams Modern British and Irish Art Sale
O'Donoghue and Lavery Also Feature

LondonThe Train through the Woods, a fine atmospheric painting by Jack Butler Yeats (1871-1957) that was once in the collection of the famous actor Peter O'Toole, leads a selection of works by Irish artists at Bonhams Modern British and Irish Art sale in London on Wednesday 22 June. Painted in 1925, the work is estimated at £40,000-60,000.

Penny Day, Bonhams Head of UK and Ireland for Modern British and Irish Art said: "The Train through the Woods is one of a number of paintings by Yeats on a similar theme. The carriage appears ornate – even luxurious – and harks back to a time when train travel still represented an exciting excursion. For the passengers the windows of the carriage would have provided a moving picture and view of the world which was out of the ordinary, and Yeats renders the scenery beyond the carriage windows and its almost golden light with his usual deft hand."

Other highlights include:

Doolough: Lake of the Sandbanks by Hughie O'Donoghue (born 1953). Although O'Donoghue was born in Manchester, he has been heavily influenced by time spent in his mother's birthplace in Co. Mayo, Ireland. Doolough: Lake of the Sandbanks is one of a group of paintings from the 2001 series Naming the Fields which focused on the townlands in Erris, Co Mayo. Estimate: £15,000-20,000.

Bull fight by Sir John Lavery (1856-1941). Lavery found the idea of bull-fighting cruel, but as an artist he was attracted by the colour and the sense of spectacle of the corrida. Painted in 1892 when he was travelling home through Spain from a visit to Tangiers, the work demonstrates Lavery's mastery of brushstrokes. Estimate: £10,000-15,000.

Arab Gathering by Sir John Lavery (1856-1941). This work, also dated 1892, was almost certainly painted during the Tangiers leg of the trip. Estimate: £8,000-12,000.

Portrait of a lady in green (possibly Margaret Edith Bannytine) by Sir John Lavery. Estimate: £15,000-20,000.
